Why Investing in Teachers May Be the Most Powerful Investment We Can Make

When most people think about supporting education, they picture students sitting in classrooms, reading books, solving math problems, and dreaming about their futures.

What we have learned over the years at Promise Village Academy is that one of the most important investments we can make isn't just in the students but rather, in the teachers.

Recently, educator Marie Heath shared her experience working with teachers at Promise Village Academy in Tanzania in a wonderful article, "Bridging Worlds: Supporting Maasai Teachers in Tanzania with the 7 Steps." Her reflections highlight the dedication of our teachers and the impact that professional development can have, even in schools with limited resources.

What stood out was not what the teachers lacked. It was what they accomplished despite those challenges. In many schools around the world, teachers have access to technology, extensive classroom libraries, learning software, and professional development opportunities throughout the year. At Promise Village Academy, teachers often work with far fewer resources. Yet every day they are helping students learn in multiple languages, develop critical thinking skills, and prepare for opportunities that previous generations in their communities never had access to. The students at PVA are remarkable, but their success starts with educators who are constantly learning themselves.

One extra special detail from Marie's article especially resonated with me. When she returned more than a year after her initial training, she found that teachers had not only remembered the strategies they had learned but that they were also still using them every day! Their books were filled with notes. Posters remained on classroom walls. New teaching approaches had become part of daily learning. Both this change and the commitment to it were truly powerful.

As a student, I often think about education from the learner's perspective. We focus on grades, assignments, and college applications. But seeing the work at PVA has reminded me that education is really a partnership. Students can only grow when teachers are given opportunities to grow as well.

Research consistently shows that teacher quality is one of the strongest factors influencing student outcomes. Professional development helps educators build new skills, share ideas, and adapt to the needs of their students. In communities where educational resources are limited, these opportunities can create a ripple effect that reaches hundreds of children over time. That is one of the reasons Promise Village Academy continues to prioritize both student support and teacher development. When we invest in teachers, we are multiplying our impact. A single training session can influence dozens of classrooms, hundreds of lessons, and countless future opportunities for students. When I someday visit Tanzania, I am excited not only to meet the students but also to learn from the educators who are helping shape the future of their community every day.

The story of Promise Village Academy is often told through statistics, from improving academic performance to expanding facilities and growing opportunities for students. And those achievements matter. But behind every one of those successes is a teacher who showed up, adapted, learned something new, and shared that knowledge with the next generation.

Sometimes the most meaningful way to change a student's future is to first invest in the person standing at the front of the classroom.
